About the Shark Diving
South Africa offers some of the best shark diving in the world, join us and we will show
you the different species of sharks found along our coastline including Tiger Sharks, Zambezi [Bull]
Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks, Blacktip Sharks, Dusky Sharks, Guitar Sharks, Ragged Tooth Sharks and more....
Each morning we receive information about the conditions before deciding where we dive. Our
diving takes place along the KwaZulu Natal South Coast on the reefs between the Aliwal Shoal and Protea
Banks. The reefs are rated as some of the best in the world for shark diving and our aim is to show you
as many different species of sharks as possible. On one of the days [when the conditions are best suited]
you will also experience Tiger Shark Diving on the southern end of the Aliwal Shoal.
Our dives start with a full briefing on surf launching, what you are likely to encounter,
how to understand behaviour of sharks and how to act in return.
The dives are generally between 20-meters and 30-meters, conditions can be challenging
and are only suitable for experienced divers. Most days you will do 2-dives however it is possible
to enjoy more than 2-dives, should the weather, sea and surf conditions permit.
We dive different areas and reefs. On some of the dives we use
techniques to attract the sharks including acoustics, chumming etc. Our aim is not to change their
natural behaviour.
Tiger Shark Diving, Aliwal Shoal, South Africa
Our dive with Tiger Sharks will rate as one of the top-5 dives you will ever do. The dives take
place on the southern end of the Aliwal Shoal. We launch from the Umkomaas River and we travel south
[about 30-mins] to the southern ledges of the Aliwal Shoal. We then create an odour corridor to attract
the sharks. Once the sharks arrive we enter the water to observe the sharks in their natural enviroment.
Over many years of diving with Tiger Sharks, we have experienced many behaviour patterns and
this knowledge enables us to experience up-close encounters with these fantasic creatures. We generally
have between two and six [but can be as many as nine or more] Tiger Sharks as well as many Blacktip
Sharks, Dusky Sharks and on occasion other species of sharks.
Before the Tiger Shark Dive, we will give a full briefing to help you to understand their behaviour
and how we behave in return. Tiger Sharks are very shy, they are also very inquisitive and
intelligent animals which is why they are one of the ocean's apex predators and deserve the highest respect.
The Tiger Shark Diving is a truly amazing experience.....
Aliwal Shoal, South Africa
The trip out to the Aliwal Shoal takes about 20-mins. The Aliwal Shoal is 5kms in length and
has a huge diversity of marine life and is one of the best places in the world to get up close
and personal with the Ragged Tooth [Sand Tiger] Sharks, the shoal also attracts a huge variety
of sea-life including Tiger & Hammerhead Sharks, Morey Eels, Manta Rays, Whales, Dolphins, Hawk
Fish, Groupers, Angelfish, Wrasse, Brindle Bass and much more.
The dive sites on the Aliwal Shoal include two wrecks, the Produce and the Nebo which can only be
dived when the current is not too strong. Dive sites on the Aliwal Shoal include Shark Alley,
Pinnacles, Raggies Cave, Manta Point, Chunnel, Anvil Flats, South Sands, False Cathedral, Tiger
Cove, North Sands, Eel Skin and Cathedral.
Protea Banks, South Africa
The trip out to the Protea Banks takes about 25-mins starting with fantastic
launches through the surf. The Protea Banks is rated as one of the best
shark diving sites in the world, and
it is possible to see many species of sharks including
Zambezi [Bull] Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Hammerheads, Blacktip Sharks, Ragged-Tooth Sharks,
Dusky Sharks, Bronze Whalers, Giant Guitar Sharks and others. During a dive on the Protea
Banks you can also see loads of game fish, dolphin, rays & more.
During our winter months, the North & South Pinnacles host hundreds of Ragged Tooth
Sharks. Fierce in appearence due to the long, sharp teeth, the sharks are relatively
non-aggresive and offer some great opportunities to get up close and personal with them.
The dive sites on the Protea Banks include the Northern & Southern Pinnacles. The northern
pinnacles are at about 33 meters and have fantastic topography with two very large cave systems
that provide fantasic protection for the hundreds of Ragged Tooth Sharks.
